Graceful Ageing: A Gentleman’s Guide to Eradicating Eye Bags

Dr Lee Mun Heng, Medical Director of Cambridge Medical Group (Ngee Ann City) shares his tips and solutions to combat dark under-eyes and eye bags.

Are you concerned about how your dark under-eyes are giving off an aged appearance? You are not alone, as many studies have shown. A survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) indicated that under-eye bags are one of the top three cosmetic concerns for men over 50. In fact, a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that 64% of men aged 40-60 are concerned about the appearance of their under-eye area, with many seeking professional treatments to address this issue.

Essentially, “the mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes that we commonly refer to as eye bags is common as we naturally age,” shares Dr Lee Mun Heng, the Medical Director of Cambridge Medical Group (Ngee Ann City), an aesthetic clinic specialising in eye bag removal, dark eye circles reduction and other medical-aesthetic services.

“As we reach 40 years old, our eye tissues and some muscles supporting our eyelids start to weaken,” explains Dr Lee. Due to the weakening of these tissues and muscles, some fat that supports the eyes moves down into the lower eyelids, potentially causing a puffy appearance. In addition, a build-up of fluid in the space between the eyes can add to the swelling.

While rarely serious, eye bags can concern those worried about their appearance. They can make you look tired and older. Luckily, Dr Lee has prepared tips and solutions to tackle this cosmetic issue.

Lifestyle Tips for Minimising the Risk of Having Eyebags
As a start, try incorporating the following care tips to minimise the risk of having eye bags into daily routines:

Get Sufficient Sleep
“Start with having adequate sleep,” Dr. Lee suggests. “With 7-8 hours of quality sleep daily, you can prevent fluid retention, which is a common culprit for puffiness around the eyes.”

Stay Hydrated and Limit Alcohol and Caffeine Intake
“Additionally, you want to make sure you are well-hydrated, but be mindful of the type of liquid you consume,” notes Dr Lee. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can keep the skin hydrated and reduce the appearance of eye bags. On the other hand, it is advisable to refrain from the consumption of alcohol and caffeine as they can dehydrate the skin, which exacerbates eye bags.

Use Specialised Eye Cream that Tackles Eyebags
Lastly, “consider applying an eye cream every night,” advises Dr Lee. “Look for those with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, retinol, or peptides that help hydrate and firm the skin.” In essence, it is recommended to look for products specifically designed to reduce puffiness and dark circles.

Anti-Eye Bag Treatments
For some men, changing habits, applying eye creams and gels, or undergoing beauty salon treatments is not very effective. Their dark circles persist because these methods don’t address the root cause of the problem. In such cases, aesthetic doctors can step in. “Patients who don’t see results from conventional treatments often come to our clinic for solutions,” explains Dr. Lee. “At Cambridge Medical Group, we first assess their underlying issues before tailoring a treatment plan to their specific aesthetic needs.”

Non-invasive Treatment: Fotona® Laser Eyebag Removal
One anti-eye bag treatment available is the Fotona® Laser Eyebag Removal, a completely non-invasive and painless laser treatment. “The technology works by allowing laser energy to tighten the loose under-eye skin,” highlighted Dr. Lee. “It helps to reduce fine lines in the eye region and minimise the appearance of eye bags for patients looking to achieve a youthful and energetic look with little to no recovery time required.”

Minimally Invasive Treatment: AGNES™ Eye Revo Eyebag Removal.
Another effective treatment to consider is AGNES™ Eye Revo Eyebag Removal. “This is Cambridge Medical Group’s signature service which uses a patented micro-needle that is as fine as a ‘mosquito sting’ to administer radio-frequency energy. As a result, AGNES™ helps accurately target excess fat in the eye bags,” explained Dr. Lee. “We usually recommend this procedure for patients who need targeted fat reduction but can also benefit from the skin-tightening effect.” If patients can afford one week of downtime, this procedure could be a suitable option to remove under-eye bags with optimal, scarless recovery.

Nevertheless, determining a great treatment plan requires a thorough assessment and consultation with a doctor. Combining both treatments offers comprehensive results, as AGNES™ Eye Revo reduces fat while Fotona® Laser tightens the skin for a youthful, rejuvenated eye area.
