A Cut Above the Rest

A British born and trained Sports Injury and Robotic Joint Replacement surgeon based in Singapore

Dr Alan Cheung is a British Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and founder of the International Orthopaedic Clinic (IOC) in Singapore. He is a ringside doctor for One Championship MMA, and Chief Medical Officer of the Wrestling Federation of Singapore. He has an exclusive client roster, and counts royalty, ambassadors, diplomats, CEOs, MDs and international athletes amongst his regular patients.

“At IOC, we strive to provide a bespoke service to suit your needs and lifestyle, whatever your background. We treat you as a unique entity, not just a lab result or x-ray. We take a holistic approach to provide the most suitable and evidence-based treatment for your problem” says Dr Cheung.

Born and educated in Cambridge, England, Dr Cheung first became interested in sports medicine when he dislocated both shoulders playing for Cambridge Rugby Club. He completed his medical training in London and underwent Fellowship training in Sydney, Australia. He trains in Mixed Martial Arts, and has competed in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Singapore and Tokyo. He is also a keen golfer and skier.

“The most common sporting injuries I deal with are ligament and meniscal tears of the knee, and biceps tendon and rotator cuff injuries of the shoulder,” he says. “From my multiple sporting injuries, I understand the athlete’s perspective of surgery, rehabilitation and eventual recovery. I can provide empathy, a surgical solution to their problem, and a realistic expectation of return to sport.”

Dr Cheung’s other specialist interest is Robotic Joint Replacement surgery, replacing worn out knee and hip joints. He is one of the few surgeons in Asia to undergo his robotic surgical training in the USA.

“The use of robotic technology to replace joints is a game changer. The degree of accuracy and control of implant placement is astounding. However, a tool is only good as the hand that wields it,” explains Dr Cheung. “At IOC we realise that careful patient selection and preparation, as well as a deep understanding of the ability and limitations of a robot, makes an excellent surgeon even better. This can provide the optimal result for a patient with worn out osteoarthritic joints.”

Away from the operating theatre, Dr Cheung is one of the few qualified Ringside Doctors in Asia. In the last year, IOC has provided medical support for multiple international sporting events such as the SEA Games, One Championship and One Warrior Series mixed martial arts competitions, HSBC Rugby Sevens, SuperRugby, and the Rugby World Cup.

“I am deeply committed to the safety and recovery of athletes, particularly in rugby and martial arts. I am thankful and blessed to have such an amazing career in the operating theatre and in the boxing ring. I advise that if you are injured, don’t live with your pain. Help is only a call away.”
